Thanks for your support of the African American Families and Kinship Care Lab and the families that we serve in our communities.  Your support is essential in helping to better the lives of children and families.

Three exciting pieces of news:

  1. We now have a YouTube video available to inform families and the community about the work we are doing with kinship care families!  Please feel free to share and distribute widely with this following link.
  2. The UNCG African American Families and Kinship Care Lab Director and Child Trends’ expert Dr. Tyreasa Washington quoted in The Guardian

An article in The Guardian highlights a new study that estimates that more than 140,000 children under the age of 18 lost their mother, father, or grandparent who served as their primary caregiver to the COVID-19 pandemic. UNCG Faculty Member & Child Trends’ Child Welfare Director Dr. Tyreasa Washington commented on how kinship care can support these children:

“When a child cannot live with their birth parent, almost always the preference would be to place the child with a relative. Children have better behavior and academic outcomes, and they are more likely to stay connected with their birth parents and siblings, as well as their culture.”

  1. We are continuing to recruit for the kinship care studies.  Please feel free to distribute our flyer!
