Dr. Judith Leitch

Dr. Judith Leitch, Department of Social Work, is the winner of this year’s Linda Arnold Carlisle Faculty Grant.

The project is: “Stories of Gender Nonbinary and Gender Nonconforming People’s Experiences With the Health and Mental Health System in the South.”

The committee found Dr. Judith Leitch’s project and the clarity of her proposal compelling.

She clearly states her purpose and the significance of the project to the field: “to increase our understanding of gender nonbinary and gender nonconforming (GNC) people’s experiences with health and mental health care.”

Her project is key to gender studies since it highlights the experiences of GNC people, who have been omitted from past research.

Moreover, Dr. Leitch’s goal of bringing “the voices of GNC people to the research community through telling the stories of their interactions with health and mental health providers” could have a very significant and immediate impact on the welfare of GNC people, especially in the south.

The dissemination of her findings in a peer-reviewed manuscript and conference presentations promises to have a positive influence in academic and professional contexts.
