The purpose of the social work major is to prepare students for entry level generalist practice in social work. This is a professional program of study which is strongly grounded for the first two years in liberal arts.
The second two years focus on the professional curriculum. The program prepares students for work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

Social Work faculty are leaders in the field and work to address major societal issues, such as discrimination, poverty, substance use, homelessness, and mental illness.
Mission and goals
The mission of the UNCG B.S.W. Program is to prepare culturally competent, ethical social workers who embody the core social work values as described in the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics.
